Book cover The Ugly Vegetables

IN A NUTSHELL: A girl learns how ugly vegetables can be better than pretty flowers.

SUMMARY: A young girl helps her mother plant a garden, but is disappointed because all the other gardens in the neighborhood have beautiful flowers, whereas her garden has nothing but "ugly" vegetables. When the garden blooms, she and her mother make a delicious Chinese vegetable soup that they share with their neighbors. The next spring, the girl sees that many of her neighbors planted vegetables in their gardens as well.
