At the beginning of kindergarten your child may understand the elements of literacy and may even demonstrate basic reading and writing skills. As a parent you wield tremendous influence over your child's perception and adoption of literacy behaviors and effective communication.

Among other things, reading every day with your child is an easy, fun and highly effective way to convey the value of literacy and to build communication skills. The levels listed listed below refer to reading level systems used throughout the United States. Whether your kindergartner is at, below or even above these levels, he or she will grow over the course of the year with your help.
